And retail is the industry leading the way with the most ADA website lawsuits.

Some insights can get the visual side of software design off on the wrong foot and derail efforts already underway, especially when it comes to the user interface and experience (UI/UX). Topping the list is client feedback like “just make it pretty,” a phrase as vague as it is frustrating when you’re a designer looking for a toehold to move a project along. “Pretty” is subjective, right? For one person, pretty could be all about jumping on the latest design trend that pushes the envelope, but for someone else, it’s about sticking to tried-and-true patterns. Adding complexity is that descriptors like “pretty” are moving targets – what’s considered “hot” one day can easily be “not” the next.

When a health scare sent Jim Remsik looking for a buyer for his company, he had to decide whether to sacrifice a high-multiple exit for his personal priorities. Jim Remsik founded Adorable, a business that develops custom software for entrepreneurs and enterprises alike, in 2014. By 2016, the company had grown to $3 million and 23 employees. On the outside everything looked great, but Adorable and Remsik were about to hit a rough patch. Despite Adorable’s rapid growth, Remsik had lost his business partner. Within a year, Adorable had slid to $1.8 million revenue and nearly half their workforce had been let go. And then Jim had a health scare. These combined factors prompted him to reconsider his responsibilities to his company and employees– and to seek a fast exit.

For any blank canvas or creative project, everyone approaches it differently. When a client asks me to create a brand for their new idea, I have a general way I go about designing. In order to reveal some of the design mystery, I will share my end to end process. My client, a coworker, wanted to create a space for people to learn how to give or receive technical interviews. It was important to convey with this brand that it’s a welcoming, diverse and a professional resource to everyone on the spectrum of interviewing. He wanted to have a web presence that included a one-page website, a meet up, a blog, and a Twitter account.
